How Do I Change the Manager on a Performance Review?
Learn how administrators reassign a single WorkStory performance review to a different manager from the review's Advanced Settings page, without editing the org chart.
In this article
Administrators can reassign an individual performance review to a different manager from that review's Advanced Settings page, without changing the employee's manager anywhere else in WorkStory. By default, each review is assigned to the reviewee's direct manager. The Change Manager control lets you swap in a different manager for that one performance review only — useful when the assigned manager is out, was assigned incorrectly, or a reorg happened mid-cycle.
Where to find the Change Manager setting
The Change Manager control lives on each individual performance review, not on the review cycle as a whole.
- Open Review Cycles and select the review cycle that contains the review.
- Under Review Cycle Status, click Reviews to see every performance review in the cycle.
- Find the reviewee's row, click the ••• menu, and select View to open that specific performance review.
- In the left sidebar, click Advanced Settings.
How to reassign the review manager
- On the Advanced Settings page, find the Change Manager card. It shows the reviewee's name and the current review manager.
- Open the manager dropdown and select the new manager.
- Click Save.
- Confirm the change in the Confirm Manager Change dialog, which shows the switch — for example, from one manager to another — before you confirm.
- Click Confirm. A "Manager changed successfully!" message appears, and the new manager now shows on the review.

What does changing the manager affect?
- This performance review only: The change applies to the single review you're editing, not the employee's manager elsewhere in WorkStory or in future review cycles.
- Manager Review step: The newly assigned manager becomes responsible for completing the Manager Review step on this review.
- Manager Oversight: The new manager will control the remainder of the review, whether that involve calibration or downloading and presenting the final review document.
- Existing organization chart: Reassigning a review manager does not update reporting relationships. To change who an employee reports to going forward, update the organization chart instead.
If every review in a cycle intentionally needs the same manager, use the fixed-manager override during cycle setup instead of updating each review individually — see the Admin Guide to Managing Performance Review Cycles.
When to use this instead of other Advanced Settings controls
- The wrong manager is assigned to this review: Use Change Manager.
- The correct manager just hasn't responded yet: Send a reminder instead of reassigning the review.
- The review should skip its current step entirely: Use Skip or Force Submit, not Change Manager.
