Connect it

Pick the Gemini you use.

Gemini comes in more than one form, and each connects to WorkStory a different way. Find yours below, then follow that card.

Gemini CLI

For: anyone running Gemini from the command line. You connect it yourself — no admin needed.

1
Open your Gemini CLI settings.

Edit ~/.gemini/settings.json for all projects, or .gemini/settings.json inside one project.

2
Add WorkStory as an MCP server.

Add this to the mcpServers block (create it if it isn't there).

{ "mcpServers": { "workstory": { "httpUrl": "https://app.workstory.team/mcp" } } }
3
Restart Gemini CLI and sign in.

Run /mcp to confirm WorkStory is listed. The first time you use it, Gemini opens WorkStory so you can log in and approve access.

4
Ask a question normally.

Mention WorkStory, a person, team, or review cycle when you want an answer grounded in your data.

Gemini app & Gemini Enterprise

For: teams using Gemini inside Google Workspace, or Gemini Enterprise. Connectors are managed centrally, so this is an admin step.

1
Check that your plan supports MCP connectors.

Custom MCP connectors are available on business and enterprise Gemini plans and are enabled by a Google Workspace administrator. Labels vary by plan; if you don't see an option to add connectors, ask your admin.

2
Ask your admin to add WorkStory.

In the Gemini or Gemini Enterprise admin console, add a new MCP connector using the server URL below and choose sign-in (OAuth) authentication.

https://app.workstory.team/mcp
3
Connect your account once.

The first time you use WorkStory in Gemini, you'll be sent to WorkStory to log in and approve access. Gemini only sees what your WorkStory account can see.

4
Ask a question normally.

Name WorkStory, a person, team, or review cycle to get an answer grounded in your data.

Not sure which Gemini you have?

If you type commands in a terminal, it's Gemini CLI — use the left card. If you open Gemini in a browser or inside Gmail, Docs, or Drive with your work account, it's the app — use the right card and loop in your admin. Either way the MCP server address is the same: https://app.workstory.team/mcp.

Data access

It only sees what you can see.

Connecting WorkStory does not expand anyone's access.

Your company only

Every request is limited to the company connected to the signed-in WorkStory account.

Your permissions only

Gemini follows the same access rules as the WorkStory web app.

Answers do not change data

Looking up information is read-only. If you ask to send a feedback request, you must approve it first.

Control

You stay in charge.

01

Everyday questions are read-only. Gemini can retrieve authorized WorkStory information without changing it.

02

Feedback requests need approval. Before a request is sent, you see what will happen and confirm it.

03

Disconnect whenever you want. Remove the workstory entry from settings.json, or ask your admin to disable the connector.

Troubleshooting

Quick fixes.

WorkStory is not appearing.

Gemini CLI: make sure settings.json is valid JSON and run /mcp after restarting. Gemini app: confirm your admin has enabled the WorkStory connector for your account.

It answers without WorkStory.

Start a new conversation, confirm the connector is enabled, and name WorkStory or a specific person, team, or review cycle.

Gemini cannot reach the server.

Check the server URL is exactly https://app.workstory.team/mcp, sign in again, then restart Gemini CLI or start a fresh conversation in the app.

It cannot find a person or review.

Check that the item is visible to your account in the WorkStory web app. The connector cannot widen access.
